The Sound of Freedom

If I asked you what the sound of Freedom was, what would you say?  Someone singing the National Anthem?  The ringing of the Liberty Bell?  How about the sound of a Harley Davidson Motorcycle?

Living in DC, I’ve gotten used to the sight and sound of “Rolling Thunder.”  For those of you who don’t know, Rolling Thunder is the name the organization that plans the annual Ride for Freedom to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall over Memorial Day weekend.  Since their original ride in 1988, the event has grown in force from 2,500 riders to an estimated 900,000 riders.  And although it’s not a requirement for members of Rolling Thunder to ride a Harley Davidson, I’d be scared for anybody who showed up on a Honda!

As I heard the powerful hum of almost one million Harley Davidson motorcycles roll through town last month, I thought to myself that the rough, cutting sound of a Harley muffler was the sound of Freedom.

We know a brand has a look, and we know a brand has a feel, but think about the brands that have a sound.  Harley Davidson’s brand stands for independence and freedom.  And even though the sound of the exhaust system is due to the engineering of the bike, it has become such an important part of the product’s brand that Harley Davidson applied for a trademark on its po-tah-to, po-tah-to, po-tah-to roar.  Nobody at Harley told me that I should equate their sound with Freedom, but I do.  What a coup for the endearing brand from Wisconsin!!!

Harley is often cited as achieving the ultimate in brand loyalty: what other company entices people to tattoo the logo onto their bodies? (Answer: Playboy, the armed forces, and …?)

A Harley executive once said that their product was to sell any middle-aged accountant the ability to enter a small town and have people be afraid of him.

I’m curious which blogging and site-building platform you’re using? I’m new to operating a blog and have been thinking about using the Wordpress platform. Do you think this is a good platform to start with? I would be very grateful if I could ask you some questions through email so I can learn a bit more prior to getting started. When you have some free time, please make sure to contact me at: Vuoso@gmail.com. Kudos
